This viscosity cup is designed for measuring the viscosity of Newtonian or near-Newtonian liquids. It is widely used in the coatings, ink, gravure, letterpress, lithographic, flexographic, and screen printing industries for viscosity measurement before or during application. This helps maintain consistent viscosity within the desired range, ensuring product performance and quality. The Zahn cup is a common tool for liquid viscosity measurement. The measured efflux time is typically recorded in seconds and can be converted to kinematic viscosity values using standard conversion methods. Standard Test Method: ASTM D4212 – Dip-Type Viscosity Cups. The test liquid should be maintained at 25°C, with temperature fluctuations not exceeding ±0.2°C during measurement. Select the appropriate cup number based on the expected viscosity range of the liquid. Immerse the cup completely into the test liquid. Measure and record the liquid temperature inside the cup, then remove the thermometer. Lift the cup vertically using the handle ring quickly and steadily. Start the stopwatch as the cup exits the liquid surface. Maintain the cup no more than 15 cm above the liquid level during drainage. Stop timing at the first distinct break in the liquid stream. Maintenance: With proper care, the Zahn cup can last for many years. Clean with a soft cloth only. Do not use wire brushes, sandpaper, or other abrasive materials. Special attention should be given to cleaning the orifice to remove residue without scratching the internal surfaces. It is recommended to clean the cup after each use, except during repeated testing.
